Step 1 - Sign up for MTD IT via HMRC
Log into your HMRC account here.

Once logged in, make a note of your national insurance number.

Go through the process of signing up for Making Tax Digital by going to this link.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/sign-up-your-business-for-making-tax-digital-for-income-tax
Scroll to the bottom and select Sign up now, and continue the HMRC process.
Please note: Select the tax year 2025/26 to enable access to HMRC’s public pilot for MTD IT.
Things you need to check whilst in your HMRC account for each business/income stream are.
Your calendar reporting periods – Standard or Calendar
Your accounting method – Cash or Accrual
Your expense type – Consolidated or Categorised. Combined income over £90,000 must use Categorised.
These must be changed (if required) prior to your first submission to HMRC.
Step 2 - Create your TaxNav account login
Go to https://app.taxnav.digital/sign-up
Enter your email address (this will be one of your current email addresses)
Create a password to use for this account.
Agree to the T&C’s and Privacy policy (click the link to review these)
Select sign up
You will now receive an email to verify your email address.
Log into the email account you provided and verify your email. (please check your spam if this does not appear within a short timeframe)
Log into TaxNav with the email account name and password and follow the onboarding procedure.
Step 3 - Set up your TaxNav account
You will require your HMRC login details and national insurance number to complete this process.
Select get started from the welcome screen.
You will now be taken through a 4-stage process.
Stage 1 - Set up your two-factor authentication by selecting.
Text message or by authentication code.
,Enter the verification code.
Stage 2 - Connect your account with HMRC.
This will take you to HMRC where you need to follow the steps.
Stage 3 – Add your national insurance number and click next.
Stage 4 – You will now see the businesses you have registered with HMRC, if everything looks good, click next and then click get started to be taken to TaxNav’s dashboard.
