Thanks for choosing TaxNav and welcome! Getting set up for Making Tax Digital Income Tax (MTD IT) takes three simple steps. Once done, you’re all ready to go.
You’ll need to sign up for MTD IT with HMRC first before you can complete your onboarding with TaxNav.

Step 1: Sign up for MTD IT via HMRC
- Log into your HMRC account:
https://www.gov.uk/log-in-register-hmrc-online-services - Make a note of your national insurance number:
https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/save-your-national-insurance-number - Sign up for Making Tax Digital:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/sign-up-your-business-for-making-tax-digital-for-income-tax - Scroll to the bottom, select Sign up now, and continue the HMRC process. Select the tax year 2025/26 to enable access to HMRC's public pilot for MTD IT.
- Check the following for each self-employment and/or property rental income stream, and change them if required before your first submission to HMRC:
- Reporting periods: Standard or Calendar (find out more here)
- Accounting method: Cash or Accrual (find out more here)
- Expense type: Consolidated or Categorised (combined income over £90,000 must use Categorised) – more information here

Step 2: Create your TaxNav account login
- Go to TaxNav
- Enter your email address (one of your current addresses).
- Create a password for this account.
- Agree to the T&Cs and Privacy Policy (click the link to review these).
- Select Sign up.
- Log into the email account you provided and verify your email address (check your spam folder if it does not arrive shortly).
- Log into TaxNav with your email and password, then follow the onboarding procedure.

Important: You'll need to sign up for MTD IT with HMRC first before you can complete onboarding with TaxNav.
Step 3: Set up your TaxNav account
Watch our onboarding video on the right, which demonstrates how to complete these 4 simple points.
- Set up two-factor authentication. Choose text message or authentication code, then enter the verification code.
- Connect your account with HMRC. This takes you to HMRC, where you follow the steps shown.
- Add your national insurance number and click Next.
- Review the businesses you have registered with HMRC. If everything looks correct, click Next, then click Get started to reach the TaxNav dashboard.
