Why these deadlines matter

Missing MTD IT deadlines can result in financial penalties. It's crucial to know your start date and quarterly submission deadlines to stay compliant and avoid unnecessary fines. HMRC will not register you automatically - you must sign up yourself before your mandatory start date.

Key deadlines you need to know:

2026

  • 31 January 2026 - Deadline to submit a Self Assessment tax return for 2024/25
  • 6 April 2026 - If you income is £50,000 or over, you must start keeping records using MTD for Income Tax software
  • 7 August 2026 - Deadline to send your first 2026/27 year to date submission
  • 7 November 2026 - Deadline to send your second 2026/27 year to date submission

2027

  • 31 January 2027 - Deadline to submit a Self Assessment tax return for 2025/26
  • 7 February 2027 - Deadline to send your third 2026/27 year to date submission
  • 6 April 2027 - If you income is £30,000 or over, you must start keeping records using MTD for Income Tax software
  • 7 May 2027 - Deadline to send your fourth 2026/27 year to date submission
  • 7 August 2027 - Deadline to send your first 2027/28 year to date submission
  • 7 November 2027 - Deadline to send your second 2027/28 year to date submission

Notes

  • Your 2024/25 tax return (due 31 January 2026) determines if you need MTD IT from 6 April 2026
  • Qualifying income is gross income (before expenses) from self-employment and property over £50,000 for 2026/27, dropping to £30,000 for 2027/28 and £20,000 for 2028/29
  • Sign-up is open - register early to avoid last-minute issues
  • From 31 January 2028 onwards, you'll submit returns directly through your TaxNav (not the old way)
