Join the growing number of people preparing early for Making Tax Digital IT with TaxNav

Get ready for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD IT) — without the pressure. With TaxNav, you can take part in the HMRC pilot for free for the 2025/26 tax year and practise digital record-keeping and quarterly submissions early.

More than 300 individuals are already using TaxNav to prepare for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD IT). By using TaxNav to take part in HMRC’s current MTD pilot, they’re practising digital record-keeping and submitting their quarterly updates via our user-friendly, HMRC-recognised software.  It’s free to use for the 2025/26 tax year.

Our pilot participants represent a broad mix of self-employed individuals, landlords, and people with property income. This includes retired individuals as well as those working in construction, consultancy, IT, education, healthcare, the creative industries, taxi and courier services, and many other trades and professions.

With MTD IT coming into force from April 2026, these individuals have chosen to get ahead by familiarising themselves with the process now. If you're considering how to prepare, you’re already in good company.

A quick reminder of what Making Tax Digital for Income Tax means

MTD for Income Tax changes how you report income and expenses to HMRC. Instead of an annual Self Assessment tax return, you will need to:

  • keep digital records, and
  • send quarterly year to date updates of your income/expense totals to HMRC using recognised MTD IT software
  • submit a final annual declaration.

From April 2026, the rules apply to individuals with over £50,000 gross income from self-employment and/or property. The threshold then reduces to £30,000 in April 2027, and is expected to drop again to £20,000 from April 2028

This affects many of self-employed individuals from a wide variety of professions and situations — from construction contractors, therapists, product makers and coaches, through to retailers, creatives, finance professionals, and of course anyone with rental or holiday-let income.
